14 October 2024Iceland Trip
Our recent Science and Geography school trip to Iceland provided an incredible opportunity for students to explore the country’s stunning landscapes and learn about natural phenomena.
Tuesday: Students departed from Heathrow and arrived in Reykjavik. The first stop was the Reykjanes Peninsula, where they observed evidence of plate tectonics in action. Next, they visited the geothermal area at Gunnuhver Hot Springs, witnessing the power of geothermal activity up close.
Wednesday: The day began with a visit to Thingvellir National Park, followed by an exploration of the volcanic cinder cone of Kerid, complete with its small lake. Students then enjoyed a relaxing soak in the Secret Lagoon, a naturally heated open-air pool. At the Fridheimar Greenhouse, they learned about greenhouse horticulture. The group also visited Strokkur, Iceland’s most famous geyser, which erupts every 10-15 minutes, and Gullfoss, a breathtaking waterfall that plunges into a deep canyon.
Thursday: Students visited Solheimajokull Glacier, observing the retreat of the glacier and its effects on the landscape while hiking across the ice with tour guides. Later, they explored the black sand beach at Reynishverfi and observed coastal erosion features at Dyrhólaey. The day concluded with visits to the stunning waterfalls Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss.
Friday: The group visited the Lava Centre, an interactive museum showcasing Iceland’s volcanic and seismic activity. At Perlan, they saw the geothermal water tanks that supply Reykjavik. The day included sightseeing and shopping in Reykjavik, with highlights like Hallgrimskirkja Cathedral and the Sun Voyager sculpture. That evening, students were thrilled to witness the northern lights.
Saturday: The trip concluded with a visit to the Hellisheidi Geothermal Plant, learning about its role in providing sustainable energy. Afterward, the group returned to Keflavik Airport and flew back to Heathrow.
It was a fantastic trip, thoroughly enjoyed by all students, offering them hands-on experiences with Iceland’s natural wonders.
